Evaluate the suggested edit
Open the destination safely and read the proposed context. Does it support the article's point? Is it accurate and useful for the audience? Can you explain the inclusion without mentioning an SEO target?
We would apply the same standard to a friendly partner as to a cold request. A relationship can open a conversation; it does not replace editorial judgment.
Ask for the missing information
If the product might fit, request the relevant documentation, current pricing, or access needed to evaluate it. Keep the request narrow so the other person can supply what you actually need.
An illustrative response could be: "The recurring booking feature may fit this guide. Please send the setup documentation and current plan details so I can assess it."
Decline clearly when there is no fit
You can say the resource does not meet the article's selection criteria or that you are not accepting sponsored additions. You do not need to negotiate an unrelated anchor phrase or enter a reciprocal-link arrangement.
If there is paid coverage, handle disclosure and link qualification appropriately. Keep that arrangement distinct from an independent recommendation.
Preserve the conversation
Record what was requested, any evidence supplied, and the decision. If someone asks not to be contacted again, honor that request across the workflow rather than restarting from another list.
A useful reply on either side gives a clear next step. It should not imply a guaranteed placement while the product is still being evaluated.
